Robert Mueller spent a lifetime in the public eye before taking charge of the Russia probe, devoting decades to law enforcement and national security work. Especially during his tenure as the longest-serving FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover, the breadth of Mueller’s responsibilities was remarkable — vaulting from funerals and press conferences to Situation Room sessions and confabs with foreign intelligence sources. Along the way, the bureau chief would meet colleagues who reappear now in 2019 as characters in and critics of his current commission leading a squad of federal prosecutors. Here are just a few snapshots of a career as sprawling as the investigation Mueller oversaw for the past 22 months.
