Garbage’s tweet on Trump upset some fans (Picture: Rex/ AP Garbage have been called out after fat-shaming President Donald Trump in a tweet. The rock band, made up of Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig, upset a number of fans after tweeting about the statement from the White House which claimed that while Trump ‘remains in very good health overall’, a four pound weight gain rules him technically obese. In a tweet from the Garbage official Twitter account, believed to be from Shirley, they wrote: ‘America. Your president is now officially obese. He wasn’t born that way or that way when he entered office. He‘s getting fat on your dime.’ Shirley’s tweet didn’t go down well with a lot of the group’s followers, who called out the tweet for fat-shaming the president instead of focusing on any of his other well-documented flaws. Shirley initially didn’t back down (Picture: Twitter) One person wrote: ‘This is literally the most fucking harmless thing about him you idiots’, while another replied: ‘Shirley, this fatphobia broke my heart.’ A further response read: ‘Shirley did you have to bodyshame? There’s hundreds of other things to pull him up on, his body isn’t one.’ Shirley began to interact with a Garbage fan named Coley, who had replied: ‘Hey wonderful folks, Trump is terrible enough in every way for there to be plenty to criticise him about that doesn’t also make anyone who physically resembles him feel like crap.’ The Scottish musician didn’t back down, responding: ‘It’s not healthy to be obese. It’s life threatening. I don’t want to make people feel bad. I want them to survive.’ Shirley appreciated being called out (Picture: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images) Coley wasn’t done, though, responding with a picture of five Olympians, all of different shapes and sizes. She wrote: ‘This photo of Olympic athletes is a good example of how weight doesn’t always equal health, but regardless, fat people have a pretty rough go of it on all fronts and something that’s really important for survival is not being the butt of jokes.’ Shirley, 52, said: ‘I’m not making a joke. I’m deadly serious’ – but then, Coley delivered the killer explanation. Not how racist, sexist, classist, homophobic, transphobic or xenophobic he is, but how he’s obese.’ Manson conceded: ‘Fair point. I stand corrected. I appreciate you calling me out.’ Garbage – best known for songs including Stupid Girl and I Think I’m Paranoid – are set to tour the US in May, playing Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, Colorado and California before embarking on a string of European dates. They will play Kew The Music at Kew Gardens on 13 July. Got a showbiz story?
