Canadian air traffic controllers are buying dinner for their counterparts in the US who working for free during the continuing White House shutdown. Employees at a control center in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, started a collection to buy pies for controllers in Anchorage, Alaska, when they heard about the government shutdown affecting salaries. When other facilities in Canada saw the good deed they decided to join in and the idea snowballed, with more than 300 pizzas so far delivered across the border. Canadian air traffic controllers are buying lunch for their American counter parts after they continue to work without pay (Picture: PWM ATCT) American and Canadian controllers are said to have a ‘bond’ thanks to their daily interactions as they manage North American airspace (Picture: NATCA EWR) Head of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association, Peter Duffey, said: ‘In the big scheme of things, sending some pizzas to people that are missing paychecks is a small gesture but the message that it sends them is a big gesture. ‘As it stands right now, I believe we’re up to 36 facilities that have received pizza from Canada, and that number is growing by the hour.’ He added: ‘Air traffic control is a very stressful job. They say you have to be 100% right, 100% of the time. ‘People just don’t need to be reporting to work with the added stress of worrying about how to pay their mortgages and grocery bills on top of it.’ Around 10,000 US controllers are believed to have worked for nothing since December 22 when the government shutdown began. The Canadian air traffic controllers said they had a special ‘bond’ with their US colleagues who they had daily interactions with while managing North American airspace. Around 300 pizzas have so far been delivered (Picture: PWM ATCT) This is now the longest shutdown in American history (Picture: PWM ATCT) The partial government shutdown has now become the longest in US history. It has left hundreds of thousands of public workers unpaid and government offices closed. President Trump is refusing to approve a budget unless it includes $5.7bn (£4.5bn) funding for a wall between the US and Mexico along the Mexican border. It was a key campaign pledge, which the president said that Mexico would pay for. Democrats have rejected his request for funding to build it and say they will not negotiate further until the government is reopened. The shutdown is over Trump’s demands for funding for his border wall between the US and Mexico (Picture: AP) Trump has been urged to temporarily reopen parts of the government in order to facilitate dialogue between Democrats and Republicans. But as the shutdown has now lasted more than three weeks, Trump has threatened to declare the matter a national emergency, which would allow him to bypass congress to get the money for the wall. Around a quarter of the federal government is out of operation due to the shutdown. Last Friday 800,000 employees missed their first salaries of the year. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
