The US government is in partial shutdown after Donald Trump threw a ‘tantrum’ over his Mexican border wall, leaving 800,000 people without pay just days before Christmas. Despite his claims that Mexico would be the ones to foot the bill for his wall he has now demanded $5 billion from the US government (£4 billion) in order to begin erecting it. Vice President Mike Pence, Mr Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney spent hours on Friday evening hours bargaining with Congressional members, but produced no compromise. This is the first time in 40 years that the government has been in partial shutdown for three times in one year. Dramatic footage of fatal gas explosion in suburban San Prairie street The White House has confirmed that Trump did not go to his Mar-a-Lago golf retreat in Florida on Friday as planned for the Christmas holiday as the shutdown took hold. A joint statement by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said: ‘Instead of honouring his responsibility to the American people, President Trump threw a temper tantrum and convinced House Republicans to push our nation into a destructive Trump Shutdown in the middle of the holiday season.’ The shutdown has meant that 380,000 workers have been given a leave of absence, meaning they will stay home without pay. Some agencies such as the Pentagon and the departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services, were already funded for the year in agreements reached earlier, and will operate as usual. Transportation Security Administration officers will continue to staff airport checkpoints and air traffic controllers will also remain at work. Those being given a leave of absence include nearly everyone at Nasa and 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service. Although many of the most conservative Republicans in Congress have welcomed the shutdown, many Republican politicians are concerned about the public’s reaction to it. Vice President Mike Pence, Mr Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner tried to strike a bargain with the Democrats but failed (Picture: AP) This is the third time the government has been in shutdown this year (Picture: AFP/Getty) Looking for a way to claim victory, Trump said he would accept money for a ‘Steel Slat Barrier’ with spikes on the top, which he said would be just as effective as a ‘wall’ and ‘at the same time beautiful.’ On Friday evening, Trump posted a video of himself lashing out at the Democrats and pleading for border security. Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino insists football isn’t all about winning trophies He titled it, ‘OUR GREAT COUNTRY MUST HAVE BORDER SECURITY!’, and said: ”We don’t want people coming in that aren’t supposed to be here, we want people to come in through a legal process,’ he says to the camera. ‘It’s very dangerous out there, drugs are pouring in, human trafficking. So many different problems including gangs like MS-13. We don’t want them in the United States. ‘The only thing that’s going to stop that is great border security, with a wall or a slate fence or whatever you want to call it. But we need a great barrier, and if we don’t have it, it’s never going to work.’ Despite his claims that Mexico would be the ones to foot the bill for his border wall he has now demanded $5 billion ((£4 billion) in order to begin erecting it (Picture: AFP/Getty)He added in the clip, which showed footage of migrants pushing a border gate, that he needed the Democrats’ help. He said: ‘We are going to have a shutdown, there is nothing we can do about that, because we need the Democrats to give us their votes. ‘Call it a Democrat shutdown, call it whatever you want, but we need their help to get this approved. ‘So Democrats, we have a wonderful list of things that we need to keep our country safe. Let’s get out, let’s work together, let’s be bipartisan and let’s get it done.’ Senators said Friday evening that they would not vote on any additional legislation to keep the government open until the president struck a deal with Democrats. Democrats are staunchly opposed to giving $5 billion for the construction of a wall and the uncertainty has plunged share prices on Wall Street to their lowest level since the 2008 financial crisis.
