Truth In SatirePresident asked aides if he could keep shutdown going “long into the new year to stop the Democrats from ganging up against me”“Hey, I got an idea…let’s have a shutdown to stop my impeachment!” (Credit: abc7chicago.com) According to sources inside the White House, President Trump’s eagerness to provoke a government shutdown was tied to his misunderstanding about Congress’s ability to meet while a shutdown was underway. “He believes the first thing the Democratic-lead House is going to do once they reconvene in January is start impeachment proceedings against him,” said one Trump aide, who spoke off the record, “that’s why he was so enthusiastic about a shutdown, one that would last a really long time. He thought Congress’s doors would be closed. He was totally confused about what a shutdown entails.” The same White House aide said that Mr. Trump also believed a government shutdown meant that the Justice Department would be shuttered and therefore couldn’t subpoena him or his family. “He has this idea that the U.S. government is like a retail store that he can close until he decided he wants to open it again. It’s so stupid. I shouldn’t say this, but the President of the United States really has no idea how his government works.” Congress is expected to meet as scheduled next Thursday, January 3, at which time they will begin impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.
