A Muslim job centre worker who was unfairly fired after sharing tweets that criticised Donald Trump and Tommy Robinson has received £38,000 in compensation. Ayub Patel, 58, was dismissed from his job after a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) investigation found his online comments to be ‘too political’. An employment tribunal in October ruled that Mr Patel’s treatment had been unfair, leading to the five-figure payout. The employee of 25 years was found to have a ‘genuine misunderstanding’ regarding his responsibilities on social media (Picture: PA Wire) The sum could have been higher, however Mr Patel was found to have ‘broken the Civil Service code of conduct’ by revealing his political views. The tweets, also directed Katie Hopkins and the British National Party (BNP), were sent in an online rant last year and deleted as a result of the investigation. Mr Patel told the tribunal in Manchester that his comments were ‘aimed at Islamophobic public figures’. According to an official who conducted disciplinary proceedings, Mr Patel’s comments could be regarded as ‘tasteless, offensive and political’, though it was accepted he was not racist. Mr Patel had shared tweets criticising Tommy Robinson and Donald Trump (Picture: PA) It was found that the employee of 25 years had a ‘genuine misunderstanding’ regarding his responsibilities on social media. At the time of his dismissal he was employed as a work coach, which involved helping jobseekers find employment. The DWP maintains he was fired for breaking the code of conduct, not because his tweets were about high-profile political figures. Employment judge Carol Porter said: ‘The comments made by the claimant on his public Twitter account were offensive, some were derogatory of the current government, and showed allegiance to a particular political party. The DWP maintains that Mr Patel was fired for breaking the code of conduct (Picture: Mike Kemp) ‘They were, as he admitted, a breach of the standards of behaviour and civil service code.’ Judge Porter ruled that Mr Patel was entitled to compensation totalling £38,000. Applications to reinstate Mr Patel with the DWP have been rejected. A DWP spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘All civil servants are required to be impartial and adhere to a code of conduct – we take any breaches of this very seriously. ‘Following this judgment, we will continue to ensure all employees receive regular staff training to increase their awareness and understanding of the policies in place.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
