The secretary of defense has resigned and will step down from the role at the end of February Jim Mattis has resigned as US defense secretary, issuing a resignation letter that pulled no punches. Mattis resigned just one day after Trump announced American troops would be brought home from Syria. Mattis was reportedly opposed to an abrupt withdrawal and urged the president on Thursday to make the move a gradual one.
