The proclamation, signed by Donald Trump, went into effect today and will block thousands of Central Americans travelling in a caravan to the US. It means that the migrants will instead have to present themselves to US ports of entry in order to qualify for asylum. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) declared the proclamation ‘illegal’ and has filed a lawsuit to block the order along with the Southern Poverty Law Centre and the Centre for Constitutional Rights. They have asked a judge to put the decree on hold while litigation is pending, stating that ‘US law specifically allows individuals to apply for asylum whether or not they are at a port of entry’. Amnesty International have slammed Mr Trump’s ‘dehumanising rhetoric’, with Secretary General Kumi Naidoo stating: ‘Asylum is not a loophole, it is a lifeline. ‘This policy needlessly places the lives of thousands of people in danger.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
