President Donald Trump wasted no time lashing out at Emmanuel Macron after arriving in Paris to commemorate the end of the First World War. The US president took to Twitter within minutes of landing in the French capital to say it was ‘very insulting’ that the country’s president had called for a joint European military to ‘protect itself from the US’. He wrote: ‘President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russia. Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of Nato, which the US subsidizes greatly!’ US President Donald Trump was welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron as he arrived for bilateral talks at the Elysee Palace in Paris today (Picture: AFP/Getty Images) President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the U.S., China and Russia. He told French radio station Europe 1: ‘We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America. ‘Who is the main victim? Europe and it’s security. I want to build a real security dialogue with Russia, which is a country I respect, a European country – but we must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the US.’ He lashed out at Macron within minutes of landing in the French capital on Friday (Picture: PAPPIS JEAN PIERRE POLARIS/SIPA/REX) The two leaders are currently in a meeting with Trump saying: ‘We’re getting along from the standpoint of fairness, and I want to be fair. We want to help Europe, but it has to be fair. However the meeting lacked their previous over-the-top warmth. Trump joined other world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, in Paris for a two-day visit on Saturday marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, which killed millions. Just hours later he Trump managed to insult many of his followers by asking if there is ‘anything better than celebrating’ the end of a war as world. It was an Armistice- that is they stopped fighting because the whole world was exhausted. The War to end all Wars. How did that work out for us? ‘The likes of Donald Trump would have us in another one tomorrow.’ The two leaders will join Angela Merkel later this afternoon (Picture: JOHN MACDOUGALL/AFP/Getty Images) I am in Paris getting ready to celebrate the end of World War One. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 10, 2018 Trump’s visit comes on the heels of midterm elections in which Americans delivered a split referendum on his presidency, keeping the Senate in his party’s control but ceding the House to opposition Democrats. Before Sunday’s commemorations get under way, Trump met Macron for talks on topics expected to include European security, Yemen, Syria and Iran before the first ladies join them for lunch. He will then meet Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will also visit the American cemetery in Belleau to pay their respects to US soldiers who died on French soil during the war. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
