Schumer rebuttal to McConnell’s Monday rant on the Senate floor — or it should beMitch McConnell: “The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close.” (“No, we’re not voting on Merritt Garland!”)Source Fellow Senators. How indignant the Senate majority leader was in accusing Senate Democrats of obstruction. Perhaps he’s forgotten his ultimate betrayal of the Senate’s responsibilities when he obstructed Merritt Garland’s nomination, which never got an up-down vote. Accusing the Democrats of what Republicans have done— obstruction — is becoming a classic tactic of their orchestra leader, Senator McConnell. … rush this confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh Clearly, the White House, Senator McConnell, and Senator Grassley have conspired to rush this confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for 2 reasons. (1) He is a flawed candidate they feared would not stand-up to scrutiny, and (2) they fear losing control of the Senate and the confirmation process in November. I guess when you’re rushing a process, anything that slows that rushed process, like thoroughly performing our advise and consent responsiblities, would seem like a delay. And so, Democrats taking their responsibility seriously are the target of an attack by the majority party. Senator McConnell doesn’t just move the goal posts, he moves the field! Just as many Republicans declared their support of Judge Kavanaugh immediately after President Trump’s nomination, some Democrats, including me, declared their opposition. But it wasn’t without knowledge of his activities as a Republican political operative. We learned a lot about Brett Kavanaugh during the 3 years Republicans kept pushing him for an Appellate Court position culminating in a “backroom deal” confirmation. Since then, we’ve learned he lied to the Senate during the 2006 hearings. Lying should be a disqualifier for any position — let alone that of a Supreme Court Justice — and in 2006, Kavanaugh lied about his role in the Bush White House. There’s evidence from these current hearings that suggests the Judge continues to lie about things from his recent and distant past. Kavanaugh lied about his role in the Bush White House. Democrats have been accused by Republicans of conspiring to do various things, but the conspiracy between President Trump, Senator McConnell, and Senator Grassley to withhold information we needed to perform our advise and consent duties is the real story here. First, Executive Privilege is used to withhold all documents pertaining to the nominee’s time in the Bush White house; followed by Senator Grassley claiming these documents aren’t pertinent; followed by Majority leader accusing Democrats of delay tactics when the Democrats request these documents. To quote Senator McConnell, “Do these actions suggest it has ever been about finding the truth. Does anyone believe that?” President Trump has nominated a Republican operative There is plenty of reason to believe President Trump has nominated a Republican operative with experience as a judge — as opposed to a judge without political ties, who can be expected to be a fair and openminded Supreme Court Justice. The documents from Kavanaugh’s time in the White House would prove or disprove this — and additionally shed light on the potential of his lying during the 2006 hearings. They are absolutely pertinent! During these hearings, Kavanaugh clearly and defiantly articulated his animus for Democrats in his paranoid rant about a Democrat “orchestrated political hit” against him and “revenge on behalf of the Clintons.” It played well with his base though. Is a Supreme Court Justice supposed to have a base? It played well with his base though. Is a Supreme Court Justice supposed to have a base? I agree with Senator McConnell when he says investigating serious (and credible) sexual assault allegations is delaying his rushed confirmation process. How inconvenient for all of us that many women have come forward with stories of sexual assault they’ve repressed for years — and with courage they didn’t know they had, do their their civic duty by letting us know we may be about to confirm the person who abused them or facilitated their abuse. And how unfortunate the alleged abuser decided to avoid both a polygraph test (taken by all accusers) and an FBI investigation (recommended by all accusers), which might have been the quickest and most private ways to get to the truth. I remind you these accusers have everything to lose by telling their truth, and the accused has everything to gain by denying, denying, denying! … the accused has everything to gain by denying … Consistent with “accuse them of what we’re doing,” Senator McConnell compares the Democrats’ treatment of Kavanaugh to the tactics “back in McCarthy era”, saying the minority party was using “character assassination” as a weapon against the high court nominee. President Trump echoes this by saying his nominee has been treated “so viciously and violently” by Senate Democrats. I invite you to look back at the recent Judiciary Committee hearing when Judge Kavanaugh was testifying and see if you think the Democrats were abusing the nominee during their direct questioning. Then, watch how the Republicans (after dismissing their “assistant” as she was referred to) attacked the Democrats on the Committee. That’s when you’ll see what “viscious and violent” look like — “character assasination” en masse! the Republican strategy to get Brett Kavanaugh confirmed So with all due respect to Senator McConnell, your over-the-top passion on the Senate floor on Monday was, in reality (or should I say, reality TV), a presentation of the Republican strategy to get Brett Kavanaugh confirmed. Make Judge Kavanaugh the victim by asserting — in the face of Dr. Ford’s most credible testimony — those who say they were victimized by Kavanaugh are not to be believed. Taken a step further, you accuse Democrats of being part of a conspiracy with those victims. Seems to me you took that exact position when candidate Trump was accused; so at least, you’re consistent. And finally, you imply Republicans willing to request an FBI investigation (heaven forbid, consider voting against Judge Kavanaugh) are aiding and abetting the enemy. Senators Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski … I applaud Senators Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and other Republicans who have shown getting this right is worth whatever time it takes. That said, I bet they’re really struggling with the fact that this nominee has lied about little things and big things. If he’s lied under oath, he likely lied to them in their offices when he told them what they needed to hear to get their votes — about Roe v. Wade, about the Mueller investigation, about whether the President can be subpoenaed or indicted during his Presidency, … about any of their hot button issues. … do any of us need to know more than Kavanaugh has shown … a willingness to lie, omit or obfuscate … As we wait for the FBI’s report, do any of us need to know more than Kavanaugh has shown (1 )a willingness to lie, omit or obfuscate, (2) a belligerent temperament unbecoming of a Supreme Court Justice, and (3) extreme partisanship and animus for his perceived political enemies, which in the most recent hearing was only rivaled by Senator Graham’s attacks? The FBI investigation may surface worse than this, but even if nothing new is reported, you already have what you need to vote “No on Kavanaugh!” Thank you! ©2018 HHThorpe Other Harper takes on the Kavanaugh debacle … MAYBE?
