Florida has been warned of a ‘historic’ and ‘life-threatening’ storm surge that will strike more than 300 miles of the coastline. The National Hurricane Centre says Hurricane Michael, rated Category 1, will reach winds of above 111mph on Tuesday night before striking the Panhandle or Big Bend on Wednesday. As a result, thousands of Florida residents have been ordered to leave their homes, with governor Rick Scott describing the storm as ‘monstrous’. Florida has been warned of the ‘life-threatening’ Hurricane Michael (Picture: EPA) Mr Scott has declared a state of emergency for 35 countries and asked President Donald Trump for assistance. He warned that the storm surge could be as high as 8ft to10ft in some parts of the Panhandle, the unofficial term for the northwestern state area, and 2ft to 4ft in Tampa Bay. Due the storm’s large size, strong winds and heavy rains, it could also cause hazardous flooding along the Golf Coast. ‘Monstrous’ Hurricane Michael is on its way to batter Florida’s coastline In a Facebook post, Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office said that their hurricane shelters would not be in use as they are only rated safe for sustained winds below 111mph. Instead, he urged residents to evacuate inland, writing: ‘This storm has the potential to be a historic storm, please take heed.’ While on the Panhandle, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan urged people not to stay in their homes and told them emergency services would not be around to help. ‘If you decide to stay in your home and a tree falls on your house or the storm surge catches you and you’re now calling for help, there’s no one that can respond to help you,’ he said. Yesterday Trump said that the country was ‘prepared’ for Hurricane Michael as he spoke at the International Association of Chiefs of Police convention in Orlando. ‘Never ends, but we’re all prepared and hopefully it won’t be as bad as it’s looking,’ he said. ‘It looked a couple of days ago like it was not going to be much, and now it’s looking like it could be a very big one, so we’re prepared. And good luck.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk? If you have a story for our news team, email us at webnews@metro.co.uk. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
