The Central American migrants moving through Mexico in a caravan of thousands of people stopped in their tracks on Sunday night amid rumours a child had been abducted. Young families are among the some 4,000 migrants believed to have joined the caravan desperately making its way to the US border on a long and dangerous journey in daily sweltering heat. Co-ordinators of the mass migration urged people to rest on Sunday as President Donald Trump deployed hundreds of US troops to the Mexican border in a bid to block their entry. But amid reports a child had been abducted they agreed to stop and hold a meeting last night instead. Violence reportedly broke out in Tapanatepec as tensions boiled over while sandwiches and water were being handed out, according to Raul Medina Melendez, security chief for Tapanatepec. At a meeting on Sunday night, several caravan members denounced the violence, with one woman speaking on a megaphone to say: ‘Is that the way we’re going to always behave? ‘Anytime there’s a rumor everyone is going to run to beat up someone?’ Some 7,000 migrants began the journey through Mexico, but it is believed there are now 4,000 people i the caravan (Picture: AP) Despite the exhaustion, caravan members are determined to continue their journey to the US (Picture: AP) Families have spent days walking in sweltering heat with hopes of making it to America after fleeing their homes (Picture: AP) Members were urged to rest on Sunday as they still face around a 1,000 mile walk to the US border (Picture: AP) On Sunday, shocking images emerged showing Mexican police using plastic shields to block migrants travelling towards the US border. They forced several thousand Central Americans from continuing their journey last night, after Mr Trump urged Mexico to stop them. After concerns were raised about the migrants being left on the road without shade, toilets or water, they were allowed to pass. Defence Secretary James Mattis later said military has already begun delivering jersey barriers to the southern border in conjunction with plans to deploy active duty troops. Mattis told reporters traveling with him in Prague that additional troops will provide logistical and other support to the Border Patrol, and will bolster the efforts of the approximately 2,000 National Guard forces already there. The new forces are also expected to provide air support and equipment, including vehicles and tents. The migrants still must travel almost 1,000 miles to reach the nearest US border crossing at McAllen, Texas. Only about 200 in that group made it to the border. US president Donald Trump has spoken angrily about the migrant caravan as he seeks to transform concerns about immigration and the caravan into electoral gains in the November 6 midterms. Stoking fears about the caravan and illegal immigration to rally his Republican base, Trump insinuated that gang members and ‘Middle Easterners’ are mixed in with the group, though he later acknowledged there was no proof of that.
