Tree of Life synagogue, site of mass shooting (screenshot from KDKA-TV)Hate rears its head in apparently deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. historyJews, and America, will never be the same after mass shooting Weary and anxiety-ridden from fighting political Facebook battles — many with fellow members of my synagogue in southern New Jersey — I took steps in recent days to turn down the temperature. I deleted personal attacks regardless of the attacker’s politics. I unfriended those with whom I waged nearly road-rage-like battles online, wanting to preserve good relations because they were still unfailingly kind in person. When I sat in synagogue this morning, I felt more serene and able to focus on prayer than I had in a long time. I just saw fellow Jews, fellow congregants. No thoughts of online rancor distracted my thoughts. The room we sat in is called the sanctuary because that’s what it truly is — a sanctuary where we can turn off our smartphones on the Sabbath Day of Rest, focusing on G-d and family and friendship. Near the end of services, it was beautiful as we sang a prayer called Etz Chaim, which describes Jews’ reverence for the Torah (the Five Books of Moses): “It is a Tree of Life to those who hold fast to it.” But then I walked out of the sanctuary, waved and smiled at the armed guard outside the front door, and entered the real world. And I saw the texts. Terror in Pittsburgh. Dear friends of ours in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood were scared but safe. “What happened?” I wondered to myself. Tears streamed down my face as I heard the news on the car radio. A Holocaust-denying, swastika-loving anti-Semite had turned the Tree of Life synagogue’s sanctuary in the Pittsburgh neighborhood into a scene of blood and death. Authorities say at least 11 were killed and six injured. The Anti-Defamation League announced that they believe it to be the deadliest anti-Semitic massacre in U.S. history. Robert Bowers, 46, didn’t ask which Jews were left wing. He didn’t ask which Jews were right wing. He simply shouted, “All Jews must die.” And he fired, again and again. A recent Pew Research Center Survey said that Jews receive the warmest feelings from Americans of any religious group, right ahead of Catholics and Mainline Protestants. But what Pew didn’t measure was the depth of hatred toward Jews from those who don’t share that sunny perspective. How Americans Feel About Different Religious Groups We Jews are not safe, and it’s an awful feeling that we won’t be able to shake anytime soon. Dear Lord, an 8-day-old baby was having his bris there, the sacred circumcision ceremony marking Jews’ covenant with God. At least 8 dead in shooting near Pittsburgh synagogue Hate is cruel and running amok. And hate is blind, as shown by Bowers. I co-wrote the memoir of a Holocaust escapee who is a fellow congregant so that his story might live as testament to the horrors of the Nazis. I assure you that there are databases with names and that there are millions of photographs, videotapes and written first-hand accounts that prove the Holocaust beyond any doubt. Yet many still deny it, including Bowers, who had a social media post saying as much. Also, the blood libel, which accuses Jews of using the blood of Christian children to make their Passover matzo, circulates today. Bowers’ social media account leaves no mystery where he stands and the depths of hatred that was in his heart as he burst through the doors of the Tree of Life. His politics are right wing and he likes the same “globalist” term for Jews that Trump himself has used. But he considers Trump a Jewish puppet. “Trump is a globalist, not a nationalist. “There is no #MAGA as long as there is a kike infestation.” But most of all, he seethes with anti-Semitism. His bio on Gab (a Twitter-like alternative), states: “jews are the children of satan.” Another post showed what Bowers’ apparent last straw was. It was uploaded shortly before the mass shooting and made it clear that he is all in for the anti-immigrant mood in America today, attacking a group called the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) that aids refugees. He wrote, in likely reference to the caravan of Central Americans making its way through Mexico: “HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.” But let’s be clear. Today’s horror is not pertinent only to Jews. The hate in our society is without precedent in my lifetime. Coming the day after a suspect was arrested for sending pipe bombs to former President Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Soros (the “globalist” scapegoat) and other top Democratic enemies of Trump, the shooting is a symptom of this unmitigated American anger. The 2017 shooting on a baseball field that nearly killed U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, a Republican, was a mere prelude to what has come since. There will be time to argue about gun control, but it is sadly a no-brainer that all synagogues and Jewish Community Centers should have armed security as a prerequisite from here on. But while there are lessons for all Americans, the fear today is primarily among us Jews. We tremble when neo-Nazis parade in Charlottesville and run down a protester. We fear when Jewish students feel unsafe on college campuses. In recent weeks, white supremacist fliers were found at several colleges, accusing Jews of being behind the sexual-assault allegations that nearly derailed Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation. Opinion | It’s time to call out campus anti-Semitism by both the left and the right This fear of being harmed or killed cannot be how things will be from now on. It just can’t. We must address the anger and not think a uniformed guard with a gun is more than a Band-Aid. I am not from Pittsburgh, but I’ve been to Squirrel Hill, the Jewish enclave near Carnegie Mellon University where more than half of the city’s Jews live. I have seen Jewish children there in their yarmulkes and their tztzit (fringes) feeling blissfully unaware of how different they look to non-Jews. I can’t stand the thought their lives are forever altered. But they’re not the only ones affected. What affects the Tree of Life affects all Jews. Where am I safe? Where are any of us safe? I’m trying to ratchet down the hate in my life. Now it’s time for you to work on yours. Ultimately, that is the only answer that can hold.
