Jenner voted for Trump in the 2016 election (Picture: Backgrid / Getty) Caitlyn Jenner has formally withdrawn her support for Donald Trump, admitting that her initial endorsement of the President was a ‘mistake’. Jenner has already spoken out publicly this week about her opposition to a reported Trump-approved policy which would narrow the definition of gender to male or female at birth in the US. And now, in a column for The Washington Post, the transgender activist – who voted for Trump in the 2016 election – has accused the President of ‘relentlessly attacking’ trans people. ‘Following Trump’s election as president, I saw fertile ground for change within the Republican Party on LGBTQ issues,’ she wrote. ‘I believed I could work within the party and the Trump administration to shift the minds of those who most needed shifting.’ She admits, however, that ‘sadly, I was wrong’. Jenner says that the President has ‘insulted’ the dignity of trans people (Picture: Backgrid) ‘The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this president,’ Jenner wrote. ‘The leader of our nation has shown no regard for an already marginalised and struggling community. ‘He has ignored our humanity. He has insulted our dignity.’ Jenner declared that it was clear that the proposed policy – which was leaked in a memo that was shared with The New York Times this week – has ‘come directly from Trump, and they have been sanctioned, passively or actively, by the Republicans by whose continued support he governs’. ‘My hope in him — in them — was misplaced, and I cannot support anyone who is working against our community,’ she wrote. ‘I do not support Trump. I must learn from my mistakes and move forward.’ Got a story?
