North and South Korea have agreed to jointly bid for the Olympic Games in 2032. In a historic show of unity, the age-old foes have come together to announce a series of moves towards official reconciliation, including bidding for the summer games. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-made the pledge in a statement, although gave no details of which cities might host certain events at the games, or how advanced the plans were. And Seoul is already prepared, having hosted the games in 1988. The two teams marched together at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony earlier this year. North and South Korea want to hold the 2032 Olympic Games together The two nations have fielded joint teams at major events and won a first gold together at August’s Asian Games. Announcing a bid is no certainty of actually holding the event. Germany, India, South Africa and a joint bid between Australia and Indonesia, are also in the running for the 2032 Games. The bid is part of improved relations between the two nations, after decades of hostilities caused by the Korean War in the 1950s. Today the two nations also agreed on working towards denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula. Kim Jong Un also said he wished to visit Seoul, which would make him the first North Korean leader to do so. Speaking of the historic meeting between North and South, Mr Kim said: ‘We have agreed to make the Korean Peninsula a land of peace that is free from nuclear weapons and nuclear threat. ‘The road to our future will not always be smooth and we may face challenges and trials we can’t anticipate.
