George W. Bush and Michelle Obama had a touching moment during John McCain’s memorial service, when the former President appeared to slyly pass the former first lady a sweet. The television cameras caught the moment where Bush, his wife Laura, the Clintons and the Obamas were sat on the front row. As the cameras panned away from Joe Lieberman’s eulogy, Bush was seen taking the sweet from his wife and discreetly passing it to Mrs Obama. Some reports on Twitter claimed Mr Bush was passing over a small mint. Roland Scahill tweeted a clip of the moment with the caption: ‘George W. Bush sneaking a piece of candy to Michelle Obama is warming my heart,’ and other twitter users clearly loved the moment. I’d totally watch a travel show where George Bush and Michelle Obama go abroad and get up to wacky adventures. https://t.co/0US5Sot36G — Ben Harris (@btharris93) September 1, 2018 George Bush & Michelle Obama absolutely need their own Netflix series called “W & Michelle” where they just go to important events and literally steal the show with their shenanigans — Al Gough (@TheRealAlGough) September 1, 2018 Seeing George Bush smuggle a piece of candy from his wife Laura to Michelle Obama while trying to be discreet gives me faith in the future of our Republic. pic.twitter.com/NskEaNFqMq — Ray [REDACTED] ⚡️ (@RayRedacted) September 1, 2018 George Bush slipping candy to Michelle Obama is a sweet & hard metaphor for all we have lost in politics. https://t.co/KTvTBhgkvg — Faith Salie (@Faith_Salie) September 1, 2018 George Bush has always spoke of his love for and true friendship with Michelle Obama. I’m glad someone captured this sweet moment between the two friends at John McCain’s memorial service, as #GeorgeWBush passes a piece of candy to #MichelleObama 💖 https://t.co/HwT1YeOaod — Traci Young Fant (@Fantastik1) September 1, 2018 Despite Mr Bush and Mrs Obama being on opposite ends of the political spectrum, the pair have had a close friendship which has been seen in public on a number of occasions. During the inauguration of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in September 2016, they were photographed embracing. Fire tears through 200-year-old museum holding thousands of priceless relics They were also spotted holding hands and singing to one another a few months earlier during a memorial service for five police officers. Both Bush and Obama, who were once political rivals of McCain, spoke during his memorial service. McCain died on August 25 at the age of 81 after battling a brain tumour for more than a year. During the inauguration of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in September 2016, they were photographed embracing (Picture: Getty) They were attending a memorial service for John McCain, who passed away last week at the age of 81 (Picture: PA) President Donald Trump was notably absent for the service, and was spotted at a golf resort that day. McCain’s family had made it clear that the president was not invited to today’s service or any of the others held. Boris Johnson lays into Theresa May’s Brexit plan saying it is a victory for EU In a eulogy, Meghan McCain said her father’s death was ‘the passing of American greatness,’ and encouraged others to live up to his example. Her tearful, impassioned tribute took a direct swipe at Trump, who once said McCain, a former prisoner of war, was ‘not a war hero’ because he liked people ‘who weren’t captured’. In a comment seemingly aimed at the current President’s campaign slogan, she said: ‘The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,’ before having to pause when the congregation burst into applause. She added her father was: ‘The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
