President Donald Trump says he’s ‘giving strong considerations’ to placing illegal immigrants in so-called sanctuary cities only. He tweeted the idea on Friday just hours after the White House said it was no longer under consideration. Trump accused Democrats of failing to overhaul immigration laws as he said: ‘The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy – so this should make them very happy!’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M57S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2019\/04\/13\/09\/12224084-0-image-a-7_1555143516263.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2019-04-13T09:18:23+0100”,“description”:“Trump’s plan, reported by The Washington Post, would bus undocumented immigrants to the largely Democrat-controlled cities that have opted to shield them from deportation.\n\nSpeaker Nancy Pelosi called it ‘another notion that is unworthy of the presidency of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges we face as a country, as a people, to address who we are \u2013 a nation of immigrants.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2019\/04\/13\/893222795124257973\/640x360_MP4_893222795124257973.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The president then told reporters at the White House that if leaders of those districts and municipalities really want to open their arms to immigrants, ‘we can give them an unlimited supply.’ He said: ‘They’re always saying they have open arms. Let’s see if they have open arms.’ Homeland Security officials said as recently as Friday morning that the ‘sanctuary cities’ idea has been discussed, but quickly dismissed, after lawyers voiced opposition. Sanctuary cities are places where authorities don’t work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to round up those living in the country illegally. The plan was panned by critics as an effort to use migrants as pawns to go after political opponents. US President Donald Trump toured the area around the US-Mexico border wall in Calexico (Picture: Reuters) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said rounding up immigrants and shipping them to sanctuary cities is ‘disrespectful’ to the nation’s challenges. She said the idea is ‘just another notion that is unworthy of the president of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges we face.’ Trump’s new idea comes days after it emerged illegal immigration to the US is at its highest for 12 years despite the president’s vow to crack down. The number of people who crossed the Mexican border illegally skyrocketed to 103,492 in March – hitting a 12-year-high. Of those, 92,607 were apprehended by US Customs and Border Patrol, who have detained over 361,000 people at the southwest border this year, which is more than double the amount of migrants detained by April of last year – and all of 2017. That is the highest number for a single month since US Customs and Border Protection began keeping track of the figure in 2012. For President Trump, who has profusely promised to curtail illegal immigration since the birth of his political career, the dramatic uptick in immigration numbers is said to have him rattled. When Time asked if the increase in border crossings is driving the president crazy, a former senior aide texted ‘not crazy – insane.’ However, the swelled immigration numbers appear to be out of Trump’s control. The geopolitical upheaval in Central America, namely Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, has convinced many families that their only hope is to make the perilous trek to the US to find both work and safety.
